Tribute to Dr. Richard Bracken


BRACKEN Richard Harold Bracken, D.O., passed away at his home, surrounded by his loving family on March 8, 2008 after a long courageous battle with multiple myeloma. He is preceded in death by brother Ronald, parents Elizabeth and Stanley Bracken. Dr. Bracken was born in Ashland, Ohio on June 5, 1940. He was a graduate of Hayesville High School in Ashland County and he received a Bachelor's Degree from Kent State University in 1963. After graduating from the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1967, Dr. Bracken completed a fellowship in Houston, Texas at the Baylor College of Medicine under Dr. Michael DeBakey. Dr. Bracken later established a vascular fellowship program at Doctors North Hospital where he leaves a living legacy of 16 fellows. Dr. Bracken practiced General, Vascular and Thoracic Surgery in Columbus for almost 40 years before his retirement in 2006. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Sheila (Moloney) Bracken; children, Christopher (Marsha) Bracken, Kathleen (Glen) Borkowski, Todd Bracken, Richard Bracken II and James Bracken; as well as his caring sister, Mary Helen Gallagher. "Grandpa Dick" also leaves 5 beautiful grandchildren: Matthew, Ethan and William Borkowski, as well as Luke and Emma Bracken. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Above all, Dr. Bracken will be remembered for his love and dedication to serving others, touching thousands of lives during his time on earth. His smile and wonderful charisma will be missed by all who knew him.
