From North Carolina - A diet low in carbohydrates may help to thwart the growth of prostate tumors. Researchers found that mice which were fed a low-carb diet had smaller tumors and survived longer than mice which were fed carbohydrate-rich foods. It is hypothesized that a reduction in insulin levels caused by the low-carb diet is responsible for slowing tumor growth. From Chicago - For the first time in over a decade, transplant recipients in three Chicago hospitals were infected with HIV by an organ donor. While the donor tested negative for HIV before the transplant, doctors speculate that the disease may have been contracted in the three weeks prior to thedonor's death, rendering it undetectable. The Center for Disease Control and the Illinois Department of Public Health are investigating the case.
From Montreal - Children with ADHD may suffer from a delay in the normal maturing of the brain. In a study performed by Canada's National Institute ofMental Health, peak thickness in the prefrontal cortex -- an area of the brain that controls attention and plans movement -- occurred three years late in those with ADHD. The finding serves to explain why many children seem to grow out of the disorder.
And finally, from Pennsylvania - Curvy women-- those who have narrow waists and wide hips -- have a better chance of not only being smarter themselves, but also giving birth to smarter children. Researchers linked lower levels of upper-body fat and higher levels of lower-body fat to a better supply of fatty acids essential to neurodevelopment in women and their offspring. The result may also help to explain male preference for certain body shapes
