July 17, 2007 (Insidermedicine)From Maryland,
The FDA has approved - GeneSearch BLN Assay- a genetic test for breast
cancer. The test- which is used when a woman is in the operating room-
helps a surgeon determine if the cancer has spread into the lymph nodes
and influences the surgical approach to eradicate the cancer.
From Washington,
Not all sunscreens protect equally well. According to a study of nearly
800 sunscreen products, 12% of sunscreens labeled with the number "30"
only protected against UVB- the rays that cause a sunburn- and did little
against UVA rays- the rays that can penetrate more deeply and cause aging
and skin cancer.
From Malawi,
The president of Malawi is volunteering to have an HIV test and is
encouraging others in Africa to do so. About 14% of those in Malawi are
believed to be HIV positive, and the WHO is recommending that anyone
seeking medical attention in endemic areas should be testedfor HIV.
And finally from Germany,
Living near a busy highway may be bad for your health. Researchers
studying nearly 4500 people showed that those who lived within 50 meters
of a busy intersection were 63% more likely to have coronary artery
calcification.
