Nerve-sparing prostate surgery


Dr Richard Commander is a 55-year-old GP. After developing prostate cancer, Dr Commander decided to have a procedure called a nerve-sparing prostatectomy. This is an operation designed to safely remove the prostate but minimise damage to nearby erectile nerves. The traditional prostatectomy, or often results in long term erectile dysfunction and incontinence problems because adjacent nerves are harmed as the prostate is removed. A nerve-sparing prostatectomy significantly reduces these serious side-effects, safely removing the cancerous prostate but limiting damage to nearby nerves.Dr Commander and his wife Vicky describe their decision to have this treatment and his experience of surgery and subsequent recovery.
