Scorpions and Brain Tumors


Traditionally surgeonsoperating on patients with brain tumors were put in the difficult position of having to remove too much healthy tissue, and possibly crippling thepatient, or removing too little and leaving deadly cancer cells behind. Anew technique, called "tumor painting" will allow surgeons to distinguishbetween healthy cells and cancer cells.Leading the research into tumor painting is Dr. James M. Olson, ofSeattle Children's Hospital and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.He is the senior author of a study published in the July 15th issue ofCancer Research. In the study, as few as 200 cancer cells were detected,making tumor painting 5000 times more sensitive than a MRI.
