August 9, 2007 (Insidermedicine)From Alberta - Feeding children diet food may actually make them fat. Research in young mice shows that if you feed them low calorie drinks and food, they overeat. But old mice do not. Moms and dads the best way to prevent childhood obesity is exercise, limit screen time and feed kids a healthy, well-balanced diet.
From Minneapolis - Osteoporosis, which is usually thought of as a women's health issue, can affect men. And new research shows that screening for it and treating it can be cost effective. Mathematical models show that screening and treating men over 80 for the condition, and those who are younger and who have fractures, are likely very cost-effective.
From Ottawa - Health Canada had approved Sativex, a marijuana-based spray, for pain management in those with advanced cancer. The spray has been available for nerve-related pain in those who have multiple sclerosis for a fewyears. The announcement is likely a welcomed relief for those cancer patients with intractable pain.
And finally from Washington - In a surprise disclosure, it appears that President Bush was treated for localized Lyme disease. Although his case mild, lyme disease can present with a rash, flu-like illness, joint swelling and paralysis. It is caused from infection by a bacteria which is usually transmitted by a deer tick.
