Zachary pre clinic - Emla moment 9-13-07
Zachary pre clinic - Emla moment 9-13-07. It may appear to some that I am being hard on Zachary or perhaps even insensitive. Unfortunately, this experience is stressful for both of us. I had been trying to get the cream on him for close to 20 minutes prior to video taping, so my fuse was a bit short. I wanted to document how the pre-systemic chemo experience begins and how it affects both of us.

Wow, I am so sorry that you have to go threw that. You are a great mom though for letting him know you still love him, and offering to take it off. Good luck and best wishes

That's exactly right, cls2b. He gets upset and anxious in anticipation of what will occur once he gets to the hospital. The cream is the precursor to what awaits him (the insertion of a one and a half inch needle into his chest). He says twice at the very beging of the video "I don't like the poke". He is anticipating what will happen to him following the application of the cream and it is upsetting to him - - to both of us.

I want to work with hospitalized kids and have done much observation when in there for myself. He KNOWS what is going to happen, and does not want it to. That is why he freaks out so bad.

I have had many medical pocedures since childhood, though not cancer. Kids sometimes freak out. Hey when I have needles I still sometimes do. I had a full blown panic attack about 6 months ago when my surgeon was doing an in office procedure that involved needles. The three people in the room thought I was in AGONY. I was unable to even talk to explain, I just shook my head, and after it was done and I calmed down explained. By the way I will be 21 in September.
