Maria's 2nd Annual Ice Cream Eating Contest!


***************************On November 29, 2007, one month before his 19th birthday, Ciro Patalano was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)

Immediately following his diagnosis, doctors at Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center informed Ciro and his family that he must begin a regime of chemical and radiation treatments that would most likely take place every day for the next two years.

This intense treatment plan has taken its toll on Ciro's quality of life. He has lost weight, hair, strength, socialization with friends and at times, his desire to continue treatments that leave him too sick and weak to even walk around his home. While he does not usually verbalize his fears, they are quite evident to his family members, particularly his mother and father, who Ciro insists both be at his side while receiving treatments at the center, and then stay with him at home, to provide immediate assistance with the frightening side effects he experiences.

Of course, being by their son's aide is the primary concern of his parents, but this devotion does not come without its own side effects. Months of leave without pay from work, daily gas used for driving to the hospital in Manhattan, parking fees, notto mention co-payments for medical treatments and prescriptions, have virtually exhausted any savings the family had, and have now put them in great financial difficulty.

All is not bleak. The Doctors are optimistic and the treatments are helping Ciro's disease and "Friends of Ciro Patalano" are planning a fund raising event with all proceeds being donated to the Patalano family.

Senator Marty Golden, Kingsboroush Community College, The Ice Cream Girl Maria, and we hope, YOU, will join together to sponsor an "Ice Cream Eating Contest" to be held on Friday, July 25th, 2008 at 1pm at Kingsborough Community beach.
